"This is equally good with meat loaf or sausages etc. Also great on meat loaf sandwiches. It is not a hot condiment but rather spicy sweet. Make this ahead of time so that the sugar crystals can dissolve. This is an accompaniment to the cooked meatloaf, not a topping before it is cooked. I have been making this for over 50 years! I usually quadruple the recipe to have some for the leftovers(plan aheads)."

Original is 6 servings

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Mix brown sugar, dry mustard and nutmeg until there are no lumps.

Step 2

Add ketchup and combine thoroughly.

  • When selecting a ketchup, go for a brand that is not too sweet, as the brown sugar will provide sweetness.
  • For the dry mustard, Keen's is a classic, but any dry mustard will work.

  • Substitute maple syrup for the brown sugar for a more subtle sweetness. This substitution will provide a more subtle sweetness than the brown sugar, for those who don't want a strong sugary flavor.
  • Substitute Worcestershire sauce for the ketchup for a more savory flavor. This substitution will provide a more savory flavor, for those who don't want the sweetness of the ketchup.

Tropical Piquant Sauce Replace the nutmeg with 1 teaspoon of ground allspice and add 1/4 cup of pineapple juice to the mixture.

Tropical Spicy Sauce Replace the nutmeg with 1 teaspoon of ground cumin and add 1/4 cup of mango juice to the mixture.

RECOMMENDED DISH: Roasted Potatoes with Garlic and Herbs: This side dish is the perfect accompaniment to the piquant sauce for meatloaf. The potatoes are roasted until golden and crispy, and seasoned with garlic, rosemary, and thyme for an extra flavor boost. The potatoes will absorb the sweet and spicy flavors of the sauce, making them a delicious addition to any meal.

RECOMMENDED DISH: Sauteed Asparagus with Lemon and Parmesan: This simple side dish is a great way to add a pop of color and flavor to your meal. Asparagus is sautéed in butter and garlic until tender, and then finished with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. The bright, tart lemon and nutty Parmesan pair perfectly with the meatloaf, creating a flavorful and balanced meal.

Excellent! We served it as suggested with meatloaf, but the next time I make burgers this sauce would go great with it too. The family loved it. Thank you Luvcookn for sharing. Made it for Billboard Tag.

A spicy sweet savory sauce also perfect accompaniment to grilled burgers, will be trying it with chicken and chops as well. I made this up in a small sauce pan as I do my sauces.I did hesitate on the nutmeg - started with an 1/8 and ended using the full amount which gave me one awesome tasting sauce. Can see why it has seen to over 50 years making at your house. Into my cookbook alongside our fav!

I put all the ingredients together in a saucepan (used ground rosemary instead of nutmeg) and cooked it up to melt the sugar. I served it up as a dipping sauce for meatballs, deeeeeelish.

mmm quite delicious and just enough spicey flavour to enhance our turkey meatloaf! I'll be using this again and will try it in our leftover meatloaf sammies. (I did cook it onto our meatloaf, it was lovely!)
