"Elena Ruz is one of the most curious Cuban sandwiches, made with sliced turkey, strawberry jam, and cream cheese on a sweet roll. The combination may seem odd, but remember, North Americans enjoy accompanying roast turkey with sweet cranberry sauce. It's not really so very different. Named for a Havana debutante of the 1920s, the Elena Ruiz is popular at "merienda" (afternoon tea). It reflects the Cuban fondness for dishes that are both salty and sweet."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Slice open the roll lengthwise. Spread the bottom with the cream cheese and the top with the strawberry jam. Place the turkey in the center. Cover with the top of the roll.

Step 2

Lightly butter the entire outside of the sandwich. Place it in a skillet over medium heat. Place a weight, like a bacon press, on top, or flatten the sandwich with a long spatula.

Step 3

Cook the sandwich until crusty and golden brown on both sides, 2 to 3 minutes per side, adding butter as necessary.

Step 4

Slice the sandwich in half on the diagonal and serve at once.

I was so stuffed after eating my sandwich...I made two...one for me and one for the hubby...we really could have just shared one of these...the bullet shaped buns are really big...but they were so good...I cooked them on the George Foreman grill and that worked great...we enjoyed the mixture of ingredients...they all oozed out with each bite...made for "Billboard" tag game... thanks for sharing your recipe...

Tasty for lunch as well as tea time! I saw red jelly in the fridge and thought it was strawberry, but it was actually hot pepper jelly. Still turned out super!
