  • When selecting the crushed tomatoes and tomato puree, look for products with no added salt or sugar.
  • For the olive oil, use a light-bodied variety that is low in saturated fat.

  • Instead of olive oil, use coconut oil. This substitution will provide a subtle sweetness to the sauce, as well as a boost of healthy fats.
  • Instead of crushed tomatoes, use diced tomatoes. This substitution will add texture and a more pronounced tomato flavor to the sauce.

Made this recipe this week. it was a bit wet, so i added 2 spoons of tomato paste, and that fixed it. the flavor compound is incredible. unfortunately, this recipe costs way more than buying a $1.50 jar of Prego.

This is a REALLY good recipe. Follow it exactly the first time. Then, I suggest making the 2nd batch by backing off the sugar by 1 tablespoon, see how it tastes. Increase the garlic and onion to your preference as well. I add in about 7 finely sliced white mushrooms pre-cooked with olive oil and a dab of crushed garlic. Make sure all the spices are fresh, and you'll save a lot of money making your own version. Freezes well for future use. Toast some bread, brush on melted butter, shake on some garlic salt, use kitchen scissors to cut into sticks, remove some sauce in a bowl for dipping, and you'll feel like a French Chef. Thank you so much for this one, it's very well done!

This was very good and easily prepared, a simple sauce with lots of depth. I DID cut the sugar back a lot, I put maybe a tsp sugar, this is probably personal taste. Lovely, thank you for sharing

What a treat! It has been ages since I made this much sauce and it won't be that long again. This is fabulous and so easy! The garlic just pops but not overwhelms. I did cut sugar in half as I usually by Prego No Sugar sauce but felt I needed a bit to cut acid. Absolutely the bomb!
