Step 1

Heat oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2

In a pan with enough water to cover the apples over medium high heat cook apples until they are cooked to a pulp and then add 1/3 cup sugar and leave them on the heat until the sugar has dissolved and apples can be broken up with a fork. Mash apples with a potato masher and pour the pure into an 8 inch square baking pan.

Step 3

To make the topping rub the butter into the four with your fingers until it is distributed and then add remaining sugar (1/3 cup) and the almonds. Sprinkle the topping over the apples.

Step 4

Bake for 45 minutes or until the top browns.

Step 5

Serve at room temperature with whipped cream or vanilla custard sauce.

I scaled back for 2 serves and cut the sugar back to 2 tablespoons (1 in the apples and 1 in the crumble). I wasn't very sure how much I would like this as I usually just put the apples into the container with a little lemon juice and then top with the crumble and bake so found the texture from puree the apples very different but pleasant, thank you ellie for an enjoyable dessert that the DS and I enjoyed, made for Billboard Recipe Tag game.
