Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 1/4 pounds apples (6 granny smith apples or your favorite apples, peeled, cored and sliced)
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons butter (chopped)
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1/2 cup almonds (chopped in a food processor or by hand)
  • Vanilla custard sauce or whipped cream

How to Make

  • Step 1: Heat oven to 350 degrees F.

  • Step 2: In a pan with enough water to cover the apples over medium high heat cook apples until they are cooked to a pulp and then add 1/3 cup sugar and leave them on the heat until the sugar has dissolved and apples can be broken up with a fork. Mash apples with a potato masher and pour the pure into an 8 inch square baking pan.

  • Step 3: To make the topping rub the butter into the four with your fingers until it is distributed and then add remaining sugar (1/3 cup) and the almonds. Sprinkle the topping over the apples.

  • Step 4: Bake for 45 minutes or until the top browns.

  • Step 5: Serve at room temperature with whipped cream or vanilla custard sauce.
