Celebrating Mothers Day

Post by Gerry » Fri May 10, 2013 7:18 pm

Mothers Day is a very special day, a wonderful day to gather and celebrate, a day of making memories. At our house Mothers Day means we gather for a weekend of family time as we do for most family celebrations. Occasionally it's been a trip to the city for Mothers Day brunch on Sunday morning, for most part we all seem to enjoy Mother's Day right here at home.

Celebrating this special day is the perfect time to make the family favourites, recipes with a taste of spring, recipes that make for memories as we honour our mothers, grandmothers and all the wonderful women in our lives as well as those we remember with love.

Sharing some of our favourites. Looking forward to your recipes be it for an appetizer, a decadent brunch, a light lunch, a delicious main course or an elegant dessert. Come on in and share your favourites.

Hoping for warm and sunny to get grilling outdoors as we gather for the weekend. We've come through a long hard winter here in Saskatchewan with very little greening out there ... but we are enjoying the gorgeous daffodils that are blooming so beautifully in our backyard garden. Perfect timing! The givens for our Mother's Day weekend grill.

Picked up a great rack of ribs, using one of our favourite mainades, Mainade for Steak and Ribs. Another given our Barbecued Chicken Breasts, and SIL's fantasitc Potato and Vegetable Grill.

What a great idea!

I think we are barbecuing this year- we live out of state and both our mothers have passed, but in the past it is usually cooking something nice and delish or going out to eat. And I *do* love cooking, so cooking on a special day doesn't bother me. In fact, I love getting an excuse to cook. :)

This year we are having a rack of spare ribs- bittersweet because they are the second of two racks, the first of which I was eating when I found out about my mom a few weeks ago.
I am going to try and recreate her special potato salad as well, which includes an orange French dressing as one of the ingredients. I haven't found the recipes that seems like the one I used to make when I works at Parks- it didn't have any tomato based product in it at all and included egg yolks. I did see a recipe in a book or the Working Garde manger, but it isn't exactly it. I know I have a recipe around here somewhere, but *where* is the keyword, as I have thousands of cookbooks. There is a recipe in the SIlver Palate cookbook as well, but it uses whole eggs. If anyone has a French dressing recipe that uses just the yolks and has neither ketchup or tomato soup. feel free to rescue me here. Otherwise I will just wing it.

For the ribs, I am probably using my beer barbecue sauce, because Dad always made a beer based sauce although he usually doctored the "Maull's" brand of sauce which you can get around St. Louis (my childhood home). I like making my sauces from scratch. And why not? It is so easy.

Ribs we will be cooking on our new side smoker grill, using hickory chips as the flavor for the smoke.
Salad I am working on, and I will post a recipe and photos if I get that one done right.

I will probably also be making baked beans, seasoning up my recipe for pork and beans which turned out nice.

I'll doctor those up with some onion, garlic, molasses, etc.

Hopefully the sun will shine (has rained here for days) because I hope it is a day full of happy memories. :) *fingers crossed for sunshine*

My Mom passed away several years ago,but in her
memory I'm making some of her favorite things.
She loved fried chicken so I'm going to season some flour
with Kentucky Fried Chicken Spice Mix, mashed potatoes, and
of course gravy. I'm creating a new recipe for lima beans
( my Mom loved those
things). And creating a new carrot cake recipe.

Our Mother's Day Desserts.

The strawberries at the market are so sweet and lush this year which had us really enjoying our weekend desserts. Unfortuantely I am needing a new pan as well as needed more time to arrange the berries. My photos just do not do justice to this awesome dessert! I did see some great photos of this one on a number of web sites. Will be sure to take more pics next time around.
