Step by Step Method
Step 1
Melt the bacon drippings in a large heavy bottomed pot and toss in the onions and garlic; cook until onions are softened and start to brown at the edges.
Step 2
Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil; reduce heat, cover and simmer for one hour.
Step 3
Remove bay leaves and ladle into bowls.
