"The Lazy Gastronome. I bet when you hear “sloppy joe” you think of ground beef simmered in tomato sauce. But in New Jersey, a sloppy joe is an amazing double-decker sandwich made of deli meats! As the story goes, in the 1930s, Thomas Sweeney (a local politician), stopped in to a local deli after a visit to Cuba where he frequented a bar called Sloppy Joe’s. Sweeney asked the Town Hall Deli to cater his poker games with a similar sandwich to the one he enjoyed at Sloppy Joe’s – and the rest is history!"

Step by Step Method

Step 1

For each sandwich: mix Russian dressing with mayonnaise so it's tighter. You need three slices of rye bread.

Step 2

Spread one piece of bread liberally with Russian dressing, then top that with half the coleslaw.

Step 3

Swiss cheese goes on next.

Step 4

Add the first layer of meat. Fold it, don't just lay it there.

Step 5

Put a second piece of bread on top.

Step 6

Spread it with Russian dressing and the rest of the coleslaw.

Step 7

Add the rest of the Swiss cheese and the roast beef.

Step 8

Spread the last piece of bread with lots of dressing and top it off.

Step 9

Cut it in half.
