"I love the ends on this bread...I always have to serve it already sliced on the platter, so no one will notice the ends are already gone. Anyway, Mom's old-fashioned recipe is moist and flavorful, with a crispy crust. Recipe makes either one loaf or 12 muffins."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a loaf pan or grease a muffin tin.

Step 2

Cream sugar and shortening, beat in eggs, then bananas. Combine baking soda with milk and add to creamed mixture.

Step 3

Whisk flour with salt and spices, add a little at a time to creamed mixture, beating well. Stir in nuts and pour into prepared pan.

Step 4

For loaf, bake for 35 minutes, then cover loosely with foil and continue to bake 15-20 minutes or until done. Insert a knife in the middle, if knife comes out clean, loaf is done.

Step 5

For muffins, bake 23 minutes or until done. Test doneness with a toothpick. Brush muffins with simple syrup while warm, if desired.
