Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a loaf pan or grease a muffin tin.
Step 2: Cream sugar and shortening, beat in eggs, then bananas. Combine baking soda with milk and add to creamed mixture.
Step 3: Whisk flour with salt and spices, add a little at a time to creamed mixture, beating well. Stir in nuts and pour into prepared pan.
Step 4: For loaf, bake for 35 minutes, then cover loosely with foil and continue to bake 15-20 minutes or until done. Insert a knife in the middle, if knife comes out clean, loaf is done.
Step 5: For muffins, bake 23 minutes or until done. Test doneness with a toothpick. Brush muffins with simple syrup while warm, if desired.
