"I've had this recipe printed for 20 years and just recently found a stash that I was planning to make back then. Placing it here for safekeeping. This recipe was presented in an old show called "Calling all Cooks", where home cooks would make their best dishes."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Mix the olives, onion, tomatoes, and cheeses in a large bowl. Set aside.

Step 2

Blend the garlic, salt, pepper, basil, vinegar, and oil into a dressing by placing it in a covered jar and shaking. Pour it over the ingredients in the bowl, and toss gently. Set aside.

Step 3

Prepare each roll by cutting a shallow plug hole 2-inches in diameter out of the top, then pulling out the soft inside. Make sure you leave some bread on the bottom. The pulled out bread can be saved to make bread crumbs later.

Step 4

Melt butter, add the fresh basil leaves and allow the basil flavors to infuse into the butter. Brush some of the basil butter into the bottom of each roll. Place about 2/3 cup of the filling into each roll, then replace the plug on the top. Use aluminum foil to wrap each sandwich individually. If not cooking right away, place in the refrigerator and remove about an hour before baking.

Step 5

Bake in a 350-degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes.

Ten stars! Oh my goodness, these were good! I really loved the flavor that the basil butter imparted to the whole thing. The stuffing itself was delicious on it's own - every single ingredient complementing the other. I used small round hard rolls from the grocery bakery. They came out crusty and oozing deliciousness! This is a unique recipe with a unique taste. Thanks so much for sharing your recipe!
