"My friend got this recipe from one of those little cookbooks at the check out stand. I like the combination of spices and chocolate. I double the recipe and make it in a 9x13 pan with no problems."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Mix together flour and sugar; cut butter into this, using pastry blender until butter is in small pea size pieces (reserve 1 cup of this flour mixture and set aside).

Step 2

Into remaining flour/ butter mixture, measure baking powder, soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves; mix well.

Step 3

Add buttermilk and mix well again (batter will be thin, like water).

Step 4

Pour into greased, 9x9 baking pan.

Step 5

Sprinkle the reserved 1 cup flour/butter mixture on top.

Step 6

Sprinkle chocolate chips and pecans over all.

Step 7

Bake 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.

This is a moist delicious coffee cake! I followed the recipe except for adding raisins. We are not fans. I plan to make this again so I'm saving it here.
