Step 1
In a large non-stick saucepan over medium-low heat, and heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add onions and saute until onions are very soft and golden (20-25 minutes the onions need to be light golden). Add garlic; saute 5 minutes or until soft.
Step 2
Stir in tomatoes, broth, tomato sauce, thyme, chili flakes, bay leaf, sugar, salt and pepper. Bring to boil then reduce heat and simmer covered 30 minutes. Remove bay leaf. Season with more salt if needed.
