Step by Step Method

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°F. Melt butter in small saucepan Saute mushrooms and onions until tender and mushroom liquid has evaporated

Step 2

Whisk in flour Gradually whisk in milk Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture comes to a boil and thickens. Add salt and pepper to taste

Step 3

Put together; on bottom half of each bun layer: 1 slice of ham, 1/2 slice of cheese, 1/4 of the mushroom sauce, 1/2 slice of cheese, 1 slice of ham Replace top of bun Place on cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes or until heated through.

The photo posted by Derf really sold me on this sandwich, and I have to say it was delicious! The funny thing is my sauce turned out dark tan in color and I think it was because I used baby portabella mushrooms. I used gruyere Swiss and virgina baked ham. I also constructed the sandwich a little different then specified as I used two torpedo rolls which I cut so they had a pocket in them where I layered the ham and cheese. Then I topped the mushroom onion sauce on top, and more cheese on top of that. Thanks for posting! Made for Billboard tag. :-)
