"I made these for my brother recently, although I didn't get a photo. It's the way I have always made them, quick simple, easy country cooking. I don't think he had ever had them before. It makes a great side for breakfast and tastes like apple pie without the crust. The kind of apples you use does make a difference. There are sweet apples, there are tart apples. There are apples which hold their shape under cooking, and those which just turn into sauce. Refer to an apple chart for apples available in your area if you need to be sure. You can easily up the amounts to cook in the same skillet if you need extra."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Peel, core and slice apples.

Step 2

Melt butter in a skillet and cook apples over low heat until they become tender. If they take too long cooking, as can happen with certain types of apples, you can add a little water to help them along, but don't add it unless needed, as you could overcook your apples. Some apples just soften up real quick, but others don't. It all depends.

Step 3

Sprinkle apples with cinnamon and stir in Splenda brown sugar and cook until apples caramelize, but not so long as to burn the sugar.

Step 4

Serve hot.

Simplicity at its best! I used normal brown sugar and just a dash of vanilla which made for 2 delicious serves of sweet and tangy apples, which I served with a dollop of fresh cream. This took me back to childhood days where my Nan would get a bag of apples given to her and she would make this served with a warm delicious custard. This make for a quick and easy recipe that can be served as sweet or savory.

Delish! I used two red apples (not sure what kind, but they may have been gala) and 1 granny smith apple. I also used 1 T brown sugar and a good sprinkling of cinnamon. We loved them - served as a side for dinner. Thanks for sharing!

I used Granny Smith's and they were delicious. A little tart, yet sweet. We loved the apples and I had mine over French Toast with sausage on the side, for Mother's Day! Thanks for sharing it Sue! Linda
