"A recipe from "Pasto - Portuguese Food Blog by Pedro Rebelo". Posting this for the Culinary Quest 2016. Here is what he states about the dish: "Mixing rice and broccoli never struck me as a natural combination until I saw it as a side dish for meat dishes in Portuguese restaurants in Rio de Janeiro. Classic places like Nova Capela in Rio’s Lapa district serve it with a delicious roast kid. This is a simple and quick version which keeps the freshness of the broccoli by adding them just before the rice is cooked.""
Heat the butter and olive oil in a medium pot, add the onion and fry gently until translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
Add the rice, stir to coat with the oil and then add the water and salt. Cover and cook for 7-10 minutes stirring occasionally.
When the rice is just about cooked, add the broccoli and mix well. Cook for another 3-5 minutes, stirring with a fork to keep the rice fluffy.

This was a lovely side dish. Adding the broccoli towards the end allowed it to steam until it was the perfect texture to mix with the rice. we enjoyed it very much. Made for Culinary Quest 2016.
This was a nice bassic rice dish. I ended up adding cooking time as the rice was still to firm to eat. Next time I will add some spices, but we enjoyed the broccoli and onions. Thank you for sharing the recipe!
We enjoyed this rice a lot! I had chopped broccoli in the freezer so thawed it a bit in the microwave before adding it to the rice. Always cook my rice in chicken broth or vegetable broth, whichever I have on hand. Did have to let the rice cook a little longer but was worth it, this rice is very good. Made and reviewed for the Culinary Quest 2016 - Azores.

Great rice! I loved the method, the onion/garlic flavor and the bits of broccoli. Yum! A definite repeat. This recipe only took me about 20 minutes from start to finish. Thank you!
This turned out really great, although my execution was not as smooth as the other reviewers'. After 7 minutes, the rice was not that far along, but I added the broccoli anyway. Then I found that the water had evaporated but the rice was still "al dente", so I had to add more water. It turned out fine, though, and was a great all-in-one side dish.
