"This can be made in the crockpot or on the stove. The stove is quicker, but you really need to watch closely for burning. You can use fresh apples if available, or use canned applesauce. If using fresh apples you'll need to peel, core and cook the apples until soft, then process in a food processor for a few minutes. The red hots give it a little kick. I have not tried using sugar and splenda, but I have been told it works perfectly."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Combine ingredients in a crockpot.

Step 2

Cook on high about 12-18 hours.

Step 3

Sometimes it takes longer, depending on thickness of the applesauce.

Step 4

Cook until it turns dark brown and thickens.

Step 5

Old time cooks recommend adding 2 Tablespoons of cider vinegar at the end of cooking (you can use lemon juice). I personally have never added vinegar, I felt the spices and red hots are a lovely blend just as the recipe calls.

Step 6

It can be stored in the refrigerator or canned in a water bath for 20 minutes.
