""Dear Abby" advice columnist, Abigail Van Buren (Pauline Phillips ), once commented that her Famous Pecan Pie was the recipe most often requested of her. She first discovered the recipe in 1959 when she was at a speaking engagement at the now-demolished Phoenix Hotel in Lexington, Kentucky. She thought it was "the most delicious pecan pie of her life", and she went to the kitchen to extend her gratitude to the chef, and he kindly shared the recipe with her. And in turn, Abby has shared the recipe with many, many people over the decades, and she had reprinted the recipe in her daily advice column from time to time when her readers requested it. Her daughter Jeanne Phillips said she had heard from many of her readers over the years who stated that they won a blue ribbon at State Fair using her Famous Pecan Pie recipe. And also, the pie has been the featured cover photo of many magazines over the years. It's worthy of sharing!"

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Heat oven to 350°F.

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine corn syrup, sugar, eggs, butter, salt and vanilla; mix well. Pour into unbaked pie crust; sprinkle with pecan halves.

Step 3

Bake at 350° for 45 to 50 minutes or until center is set. (Toothpick inserted in center will come out clean when pie is done.) Cool. If crust or pie appears to be getting too brown, cover with foil for the remaining baking time.

Step 4

You can top it with a bit of whipped cream, but even plain, nothing tops this!

Step 5

TIP: The original recipe stated that the pie should be baked 45 to 50 minutes in a preheated 350° gas oven. If an electric oven is used, it may be necessary to add 15 to 20 minutes to the baking time. (Begin testing the pie with a toothpick after 45 minutes.)
