"This is a nice hearty stew that I have been making for many years. It came from an Amish cookbook. It is a very quick meal to throw together, if you already have your stew meat cubed. (The prep time does not include cubing the stew meat). You can add tomatoes, if you like also. We prefer this stew without tomatoes, which is just a personal preference. It can be made in the oven or the crockpot. The most important thing to remember with this stew is not to stir it while it is cooking. This makes a nice meal serve with dinner rolls or biscuits."

it was lovely to put this in the oven and walk away 'til supper time, very tasty and so easy to put together, almost like a day i didn't have to cook. our first stew of this fall, perfect for a cool fall day.  I left out the tapioca out and thickened it with cornstarch in the last 15 minutes, sorry we don't care for tapioca, but it turned out rich and delicious.
