"This has been a favourite breakfast here for ages. DD just loved this when she was little and requested it whenever she had a sleepover. She still loves it today. Gluten free oats should be used if little celiacs are coming over."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Place the chopped apples in a heavy saucepan along with the ginger, allspice, brown sugar and water.

Step 2

Bring to a boil and reduce heat; cover and simmer over low heat for about 5 minutes until apples are just soft but not falling apart.

Step 3

Set aside and keep warm by keeping lid on.

Step 4

Bring the milk to a boil; remove from heat and add the rolled oats.

Step 5

Return to low heat and stir for about 5 minutes until oatmeal has thickened and softened.

Step 6

Stir in 1/2 of the apple mixture and divide mixture into 4 bowls.

Step 7

Top these 4 bowls with the rest of the apple mixture and enjoy.

Engrossed

Lovely hearty oatmeal! I made a half recipe of this with honeycrisp apples. I really enjoyed it, but I think I would have liked it even more with more sugar and spice. I topped it with a nice dried cranberry honey pecan topping. Freddy Cat says thanks for breakfast! Made for the Shoot Me Please! photo event.
