Step by Step Method

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Step 2

Spray a large casserole dish or 9×13-inch glass baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.

Step 3

In a large bowl, combine the apple slices, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and toss to coat the apples and transfer to the prepared baking dish (this is an important step otherwise you will end up with a watery sauce instead of a syrupy one).

Step 4

To make the topping, combine the flour, brown sugar and oats in a medium bowl and add the butter pieces, and with your fingers, rub the butter in the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 5

Sprinkle this mixture over the apples and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the topping is crisp and golden and the inside is warm and bubbly.

Step 6

Let sit for about 20-30 minutes before serving with vanilla ice cream or cream.

The hardest part was prepping apples. We used a combination of Granny Smith and Honey Crisp. This was easy to prepare. The flavor was delicious. Definitely a repeat recipe.
