Step by Step Method

Step 1

In pan your going to cook in add oats and water

Step 2

Cover let soak overnight

Step 3

Bring oats and water to a simmer over medium-high heat, seasoning lightly with salt to taste. Reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer and cook uncovered, stirring frequently but slowly, until porridge is well-thickened but still flows slightly, about 5 minutes for overnight oats and 20 minutes for unsoaked oats.

Step 4

If oats are still too firm to your taste, stir in additional water 1/4 cup at a time, and continue cooking, until desired texture of oats is reached.

Step 5

Serve with a sprinkle of brown sugar

Step 6

And a small pitcher of cream on the side

This is exactly how I cook oatmeal, with the same ratio of oatmeal to liquid, as my dear mom taught me. I did however, add part milk and part water for the cooking liquid. Once it was placed into a bowl, poured a bit of cream on the edge, sprinkled with cinnamon and brown sugar over the top. So good! Love oatmeal, and in my humble opinion, steal cut is the Best! Thank you, Dee, for sharing. Made it for “For your Consideration” tag game and “St. Patrick’s Day Event”.
