Editorial Notes

The ingredient tips, suggestions, variations, facts, questions and answers below are not edits to the original author's recipe. They are not meant to imply any change would improve the recipe. They're offered for convenience, alternative ideas, and points of interest. If you have any comments about them, please post in the Help & Ideas forum.

  • Look for shrimp that have been peeled and de-veined to save time and effort.
  • Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best flavor.

  • Substitute the mayonnaise for Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is a healthier alternative to mayonnaise as it is lower in calories and fat. It also provides a great source of protein, calcium and probiotics. This substitution can give the dish a creamy texture and a slightly tangy flavor.
  • Substitute the taco seasoning mix for a combination of chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and onion powder: This combination of spices provides a more robust flavor than the taco seasoning mix. It also allows you to customize the amount of each spice to your liking. This substitution can give the dish a deeper, more complex flavor.

Vegetarian Variation Replace the prawns with 500 grams of firm tofu, cut into cubes and stir-fry in the vegetable oil until golden brown. Add the taco seasoning mix and stir to coat the tofu.

Daily Inspiration

Made these delicious shrimp tacos -- really enjoyed them. I only made two changes -- I used soft corn tortillas and I used the slaw mix raw and dolloped the sauce over the top of the taco. Will definitely make these again soon as shrimp is so readily available here and we love this Tex-Mex version with the shrimp.
