"Tea is perhaps the most common home remedy for a sore throat. This recipe is a fusion between the two recipes used by my Mom and my Mother in Law. It is made with garlic and red onion, both known to help fight infection, but don't let that put you off--this also contains fresh mint leaves and lemon that mask any strong flavors to make a soothing and healing tea. • When selecting the red onion, choose one that is firm and has a vibrant color.
  • When adding the garlic, make sure to mince it finely for the best flavor.

  • Substitute the red onion for a shallot, which has a milder flavor. This will help to reduce the strong flavor of the tea, while still providing the same health benefits.
  • Substitute the lemon or lime for orange or grapefruit, which will provide a sweeter flavor. This will help to balance out the strong flavors of the garlic and red onion and make the tea more enjoyable to drink.

Lemon-Ginger Tea Replace the red onion and garlic with a 2-inch piece of fresh ginger root and the lemon with 1/2 teaspoon of lemon zest. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar to the tea and steep for 10 minutes. Serve hot with a sprinkle of fresh mint leaves.

Mint-Lime Tea Replace the red onion and garlic with a 2-inch piece of fresh mint leaves and the lemon with 1/2 teaspoon of lime zest. Add 1 teaspoon of honey to the tea and steep for 10 minutes. Serve hot with a sprinkle of fresh ginger root.
