"This is another version of Irish soda bread. Another recipe for it is included among My Recipes. I like them both equally. Lower-calorie substitute for the buttermilk: 1-1/3 cup lukewarm nonfat milk and 1-1/3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice. Let stand 5 minutes and beat briskly."

Step by Step Method
Step 1
Sift the first 6 ingredients.
Step 2
Cut in the margarine (or butter) till the mixture is like cornmeal.
Step 3
1. Add the buttermilk and stir only till moistened.
Step 4
2. Mix the currants or raisins in lightly.
Step 5
3. Shape into a ball and knead for about 15 seconds.
Step 6
4. Put on lightly greased cookie sheet. Using palm of hand, flatten dough into a circle about 7" in diameter and 1½" thick. With a sharp knife, cut a cross on top about ¼" deep and 5" long, to prevent cracking.
Step 7
5. Bake in a preheated 350' oven 45-50 minutes.
Step 8
6. Cool on rack.
