Step 1: Sift the first 6 ingredients.
Step 2: Cut in the margarine (or butter) till the mixture is like cornmeal.
Step 3: 1. Add the buttermilk and stir only till moistened.
Step 4: 2. Mix the currants or raisins in lightly.
Step 5: 3. Shape into a ball and knead for about 15 seconds.
Step 6: 4. Put on lightly greased cookie sheet. Using palm of hand, flatten dough into a circle about 7" in diameter and 1½" thick. With a sharp knife, cut a cross on top about ¼" deep and 5" long, to prevent cracking.
Step 7: 5. Bake in a preheated 350' oven 45-50 minutes.
Step 8: 6. Cool on rack.
