Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/3 cup margarine or butter
  • 1-1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup currants or raisins

How to Make

  • Step 1: Sift the first 6 ingredients.

  • Step 2: Cut in the margarine (or butter) till the mixture is like cornmeal.

  • Step 3: 1. Add the buttermilk and stir only till moistened.

  • Step 4: 2. Mix the currants or raisins in lightly.

  • Step 5: 3. Shape into a ball and knead for about 15 seconds.

  • Step 6: 4. Put on lightly greased cookie sheet. Using palm of hand, flatten dough into a circle about 7" in diameter and 1½" thick. With a sharp knife, cut a cross on top about ¼" deep and 5" long, to prevent cracking.

  • Step 7: 5. Bake in a preheated 350' oven 45-50 minutes.

  • Step 8: 6. Cool on rack.
