President Washington's Custard
"MARTHA WASHINGTON'S CUSTARD. This custard can have raisins and cooked rice added to it. If a pie is desired, use a partially cooked pie shell. They would have had a richer milk so adding some 1/2 and 1/2 might be good. Whipped cream, sprinkled with nutmeg, if desired."

Step by Step Method
Step 1
Scald milk with bay leaf and cinnamon stick.
Step 2
In a bowl, thoroughly combine eggs with egg yolks, sugar, vanilla, nutmeg, and salt.
Step 3
Strain milk over egg mixture and pour into small glass dishes (ramekins) or a casserole.
Step 4
Bake these in a pan with water in it. (Bain Marie water bath)
Step 5
Test custard with knife.
Step 6
It is better to undercook then over cook, 40 to 50 minutes in 325 degree oven.
Step 7
Garnish with whipped cream and sprinkle nutmeg on it
