"This was my favorite of my mom's salads. Don't let the buttermilk scare you off, you can't tell it's in there."
In saucepan, combine pineapple and sugar, bring to a boil, stirring occassionally.
When mixture boils, immediately add gelatin and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
Stir in buttermilk. Chill until partially set, about an hour.
Fold in whipped topping, and nuts if desired.
If necessary, chill until mixture mounds slightly. Then pour into a lightly oiled 8 1/2 cup mold and chill overnight.
