Step 1: In saucepan, combine pineapple and sugar, bring to a boil, stirring occassionally.
Step 2: When mixture boils, immediately add gelatin and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
Step 3: Stir in buttermilk. Chill until partially set, about an hour.
Step 4: Fold in whipped topping, and nuts if desired.
Step 5: If necessary, chill until mixture mounds slightly. Then pour into a lightly oiled 8 1/2 cup mold and chill overnight.
