Step by Step Method

Step 1

Add 1 teaspoon baking soda to 6 cups water.

Step 2

Bring water to a boil.

Step 3

Sort through beans for debris.

Step 4

Add navy beans to water.

Step 5

Boil 10 minutes.

Step 6

Turn off heat.

Step 7

Cover pot.

Step 8

Let sit overnight.

Next morning

Rinse beans well.

Add beans and and rest of ingredients

In the crockpot

Use enough water to just cover the beans.

Start out on high for 2 hours and then about another 4 hours on low.

Stir every hour and add water as necessary.Once

The bean achieved the desired consistency, thick and creamy,they are done.

I cut the recipe in half. I ended up using more bacon and was unsure of the amount of brown sugar because when I adjusted the recipe on the site, it increased the amount of brown sugar instead of decreasing it. So I just used as much as suited my taste . Added additional salt as well. After 6 hours the beans were still quite runny, so I put them in a casserole and put them in the oven for a bit. That made them perfect. Great side for a cook out.
