Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 pound dry navy beans
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 cups water, to cover
  • 1 teaspoon salt,to taste
  • 3 ounces bacon, diced
  • 1⁄4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 cup onion, chopped, (optional)
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Add 1 teaspoon baking soda to 6 cups water.

  • Step 2: Bring water to a boil.

  • Step 3: Sort through beans for debris.

  • Step 4: Add navy beans to water.

  • Step 5: Boil 10 minutes.

  • Step 6: Turn off heat.

  • Step 7: Cover pot.

  • Step 8: Let sit overnight.

  • Step 9: Next morning

  • Step 10: Rinse beans well.

  • Step 11: Add beans and and rest of ingredients

  • Step 12: In the crockpot

  • Step 13: Use enough water to just cover the beans.

  • Step 14: Start out on high for 2 hours and then about another 4 hours on low.

  • Step 15: Stir every hour and add water as necessary.Once

  • Step 16: The bean achieved the desired consistency, thick and creamy,they are done.

  • Step 17: Check and see if they need more salt
