"This is a a very old family recipe, a delicious golden oldie that is a given on the serving trays at large gatherings here on the prairies. One of my favourites to serve to family and friends. A favourite at coffee hour, teas and bake sales and potlucks as well."

Step by Step Method
Step 1
Filling, in pot over medium heat bring cold water and dates to a boil, and simmer two minutes, until dates nicely softened
Step 2
Add brown sugar, simmer until sugar is dissolved
Step 3
Remove from heat, blend in the orange and lemon juice and set aside while making crumb crust
Step 4
Crumb crust, in large bowl put in the flour, soda, baking powder, salt and blend with a whisk to mix
Step 5
Add the brown sugar and rub in the margarine with the tips of fingers to mix.
Step 6
Add oatmeal and mix well
Step 7
Assemble, spread and pat half the crumbs on the bottom of a greased 9x13 pan, saving the other half for the top
Step 8
Cover base with cool date filling, spread evenly and top with rest of crumbs
Step 9
Bake at 325 for 30- 35 minutes or (until top nice and gold)
Step 10
To serve small for the dainty tray or large and generous for dessert
