"When I was in younger and in university there was a Greek restaurant downtown in the city. The guys I used to hang out with always went there on a Friday night and of course I got used to Gyros quite quickly. And they easily became one of my favorite foods. I use beef, although the traditional Gyro is made with lamb. Super delicious! I made this #recipe8379 sauce for this Gyro recipe."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Mix all the ingredients listed for the Beef in a bowl.

Step 2

Lay down parchment paper or wax paper on a large cutting board or flat surface.

Step 3

Put your beef mixture onto the paper and layer another sheet of paper on top of the beef mixture.

Step 4

Using a rolling pin flatten the meat mixture so that it is thin, like bacon.

Step 5

Cut up the slices in 2x4 inch pieces or a size you would like.

Step 6

Put on plate and refrigerate for an hour or two.

Step 7

Grill on your BBQ or in a pan. You want the meat to have a bit of a crust around the edges because it just tastes better that way!

Step 8

Put the slabs of meat onto the pita, layer with onion, slices of tomato, and lather with Tzatziki sauce - cucumber slices and feta cheese optional

Tips

  • As you will be eating the Gyro with your hands, you will want to make sure that you have plenty of napkins around!
  • Did you know: Many people pronounce the Gyro as "Gi-roe." But the G is actually silent in this Greek food dish and it is properly pronounced like "Yee-ro".
  • The Gyro is meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie, thinly sliced and traditionally consists of the meat on a pita topped with onions, tomato and tzatziki sauce. But hey, since it is your Gyro, add whatever additional toppings you love!

Oh wow! We just made this gyro recipe with tzatziki sauce we had on hand. I really don’t like marinating something overnight (takes too long lol) but making the meat on this gyro was easy. Loved it!
