Step by Step Method

Step 1

In a bowl combine beef, 2 1/4 teaspoons oil, worcestershire, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Divide into 4 portions, shaping each into a 4 inch patty.

Step 2

Heat a skillet over medium high heat and add 1 tablespoon oil to pan. Add patties and cook 3-5 minutes on each side. Remove from skillet and add remaining 1 tablespoon oil; swirl to coat pan. Add onion and mushrooms to pan; cook 5-6 minutes or until mushrooms brown; sprinkle with flour and remaining salt and pepper and cook another 2 minutes. Add broth to pan and cook another minute until thickened and slightly reduced, stirring frequently.

Step 3

Return patties to pan and spoon onion mixture over patties; sprinkle with cheese; cover and cook 3 minutes or until cheese melts.

I made a couple of changes to this recipe to make it gluten free and dairy free. I made a beef gravy with beef stock and cornstarch and simply omitted the cheese. This was pure comfort food. We all loved it

Delicious blast from the past! Pretty much how my Mom made it. Thank you so much sharing Ellie! Made for Billboard Recipe Tag.

Another great "comfort" food from you. Took me back to the 1950s. I forgot to put the gruyere on before plating, so it didn't get melted, but still delicious.
