"I really enjoy caramelized onions; but, face it ... sometimes, I just don't have the time or patience to make them. They are a great condiment - to top a steak, grilled chicken, burgers, sausages or brats; and, also very nice chilled on sandwiches too. Make a big batch of these and freeze in small ziploc bags. Simply thaw and use them as needed. You can heat them up in the microwave; or, served chilled or room temp. It doesn't get much easier. If you like a bit more flavor ... add a couple of tablespoons of white wine or sherry to them."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Crock Pot ... Add everything to the crock pot, cover, and cook on low anywhere from 8-10 hours. My oval crock pot takes 8 hours on low, but it is bigger and newer; my older round pot takes a good 10 hours. I try to stir it once during cooking, but it isn't necessary. Last time, I made them over night, and they went almost 12 hours in my smaller crock; and they still turned out perfect.

Step 2

Serve and ENJOY! ... Use what you need; then, refrigerate or freeze the rest. They will last 1 week in the refrigerator, and a good 3 months in the freezer. As I mentioned, they are great chilled, room temp, or served warm.

I was glad to find this recipe. I used the onions to make a French Onion soup. Worked perfectly and tasted so good using these onions.

I was grilling some sausage and brats and decided to try this for the onions. I made up a double batch so I could have some mixed with peppers for the sausage and brats. The others I used for steak later on in the week. I love that I didn't have to use the stove to make these. I see myself making these often with the warm weather and cooking outside!
