"These are very chocolate-ty cookies and are coated with confectioners sugar. They are soft and yummy--don't over bake them. My daughter and granddaughter love them"

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Melt the shortening and chocolate in a bowl over hot water; cool slightly.

Step 2

Take off heat and with an electric mixer, blend in the white sugar; beat in eggs, one at a time, beating for 1 minute after each additon and then add the vanilla.

Step 3

Add flour, baking powder, and salt and mix well; chill for 15 minutes as the dough will be very soft.

Step 4

Put the confectioner sugar in a shallow bowl so you can roll each ball in it.

Step 5

Roll dough into balls the size of a walnut and roll in the confectioners sugar; bake at 300 degrees for 12-15 minutes---they should be soft to the touch in oven when you take them out as they want to be soft and chewy when done.

I love these cookies! They were called Chocolate Crinkles in my Mom's cookbook, but the recipe is almost identical. Her recipe uses 1/2 cup vegetable oil rather than shortening. Thanks for posting this recipe, they are just like the ones Mom used to make.
