Step 1
Brown ground beef and onion together until beef is lightly browned; drain most of excess liquid.
Step 2
Prepare rice according to package directions using the water: Bring water to a boil. Stir in rice, reduce heat to medium, cover and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes.
Step 3
Reserve 1/4 cup grated cheese; combine remaining ingredients with the ground beef and spoon into a 2-quart casserole dish.
Step 4
Bake at 350F for 30 minutes; sprinkle reserved cheese over the top and bake an additional 5 minutes.
Step 5
Let stand 5-10 minutes before serving.
