  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 onion, medium (chopped)
  • 1 cup brown rice, instant
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 can (14.5 ounce) green beans (cut green beans, drained)
  • 1 can (4 ounce) mushrooms, drained
  • 1 can (15 ounce) tomato sauce
  • 8 ounces cheddar cheese (one package, extra-sharp cheddar cheese, grated)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce (Tabasco)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

How to Make

  • Step 1: Brown ground beef and onion together until beef is lightly browned; drain most of excess liquid.

  • Step 2: Prepare rice according to package directions using the water: Bring water to a boil. Stir in rice, reduce heat to medium, cover and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes.

  • Step 3: Reserve 1/4 cup grated cheese; combine remaining ingredients with the ground beef and spoon into a 2-quart casserole dish.

  • Step 4: Bake at 350F for 30 minutes; sprinkle reserved cheese over the top and bake an additional 5 minutes.

  • Step 5: Let stand 5-10 minutes before serving.
