Step by Step Method

Step 1

Coat the bottom of a saute pan with olive oil.

Step 2

Add butter.

Step 3

Heat the pan on medium high until oil is shimmering.

Step 4

Add the onion slices and stir to coat the onions with the oil.

Step 5

Season lightly.

Step 6

Cook onions for 30 minutes to 1 hour, stirring every few minutes.

Step 7

Let them get slightly sticky so that they brown, but stir them before they burn.

Step 8

When they’re evenly brown, you can add a splash of balsamic vinegar to add flavor and also deglaze the pan to make it easier to clean.

Step 9

Refrigerate the caramelized onions.

Step 10

When fully cooled, add desired amount to cream cheese.

Step 11

Keep rest of onions for other things.
