Step 1: Coat the bottom of a saute pan with olive oil.
Step 2: Add butter.
Step 3: Heat the pan on medium high until oil is shimmering.
Step 4: Add the onion slices and stir to coat the onions with the oil.
Step 5: Season lightly.
Step 6: Cook onions for 30 minutes to 1 hour, stirring every few minutes.
Step 7: Let them get slightly sticky so that they brown, but stir them before they burn.
Step 8: When they’re evenly brown, you can add a splash of balsamic vinegar to add flavor and also deglaze the pan to make it easier to clean.
Step 9: Refrigerate the caramelized onions.
Step 10: When fully cooled, add desired amount to cream cheese.
Step 11: Keep rest of onions for other things.
