  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar

How to Make

  • Step 1: Coat the bottom of a saute pan with olive oil.

  • Step 2: Add butter.

  • Step 3: Heat the pan on medium high until oil is shimmering.

  • Step 4: Add the onion slices and stir to coat the onions with the oil.

  • Step 5: Season lightly.

  • Step 6: Cook onions for 30 minutes to 1 hour, stirring every few minutes.

  • Step 7: Let them get slightly sticky so that they brown, but stir them before they burn.

  • Step 8: When they’re evenly brown, you can add a splash of balsamic vinegar to add flavor and also deglaze the pan to make it easier to clean.

  • Step 9: Refrigerate the caramelized onions.

  • Step 10: When fully cooled, add desired amount to cream cheese.

  • Step 11: Keep rest of onions for other things.
