"This recipe's from Southern Living and is now my most requested recipe to bring to gatherings. If you can't find frozen cherries you can substitute 2 cups canned tart cherries. If you like sweets, you're going to love this and it's easily doubled."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Peel and slice apples 1/2 inch thick.

Step 2

Mix together the apples, sugar and flour.

Step 3

Melt butter in a large skillet, add apple mixture and cook, stirring often until syrup thickens and apples are tender, about 25 minutes.

Step 4

Remove from heat and stir in the cherries, lemon zest, juice and cinnamon.

Step 5

Spoon mixture into a 1 1/2 quart casserole and bake for 12 minutes at 425 degrees. Remove from oven.

Step 6

While filling is in the oven, prepare biscuits by stirring together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

Step 7

Cut butter into flour mixture using a pastry blender or fork until crumbly, then stir in milk.

Step 8

On a lightly floured surface, knead dough 4 or 5 times, then roll into a 9" square.

Step 9

Combine melted butter and brown sugar. Sprinkle over dough along with almonds.

Step 10

Roll up and pinch seam to seal.

Step 11

Cut roll into 1" slices and add to the top of apple/cherry mixture.

Step 12

Place back in the oven for 15 to 17 minutes or until biscuits are nicely browned.

Step 13

Top with ice cream if desired.

Love-love-love this one! What a find - always excites me to find a dessert that is new to us and new to our area for the potlucks! I didn't find the frozen cherries but did as you suggested subbing with the canned sour cherries in a jar, worked beautifully! I can't wait to take this to our Easter morning potluck brunch!
