Step by Step Method

Step 1

In a large cast iron skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons butter and then add the onion and cook stirring occasionally until softened and golden brown (35 minutes). Remove onion from skillet and wipe skillet clean.

Step 2

In a bowl combine the beef, worcestershire salt and pepper; divide into 6 portions and shape each into a patty about the same size as the bread.

Step 3

In the same skillet on medium high heat cook the patties until browned (2-5 minutes per side). Remove patties from skillet and wipe the skillet clean.

Step 4

In a bowl combine the mayonnaise, mustard and paprika. Spread mixture onto one side of all the bread slices. Top half of the bread slices with 1 sliced cheese, patty, onions, 1 slice cheese and the remaining bread slice (so each sandwich will have 2 slices of cheese).

Step 5

In the same skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons butter and then add 3 sandwiches; cook until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted (3-5 minutes per side). Repeat with the remaining butter and the remaining 3 sandwiches.

These were scrumptious with its toasty butter grilled bread and then filled with all that burger goodness, yummm. The caramelized onions are the perfect filling for these. Good stuff, especially for a weeknight. Thank you, ellie, for sharing.
