"This is a moist lasagna so if you like a firmer texture reduce the amount of beef broth and/or drain the stewed tomatoes Ricotta cheese can be used in place of the cottage cheese."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

For meat sauce: Over medium high heat sauté onion and garlic in oil until lightly browned. Add beef and brown. Drain.

Step 2

Add remaining ingredients stir to combine and simmer uncovered for 1 hour, salt and pepper to taste, add wine stir and cook an additional 1/2 hour. Skim off any grease that forms during this time. Remove bay leaf.

Step 3

For cheese sauce mix together all ingredients except mozzarella.

Step 4

Cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions drain and rinse.

Step 5

In a 9 x 13 casserole dish sprayed with non-stick, spread out a small amount of sauce then place 1/3 of the noodles on the bottom, add 1/3 cheese sauce, 1/3 meat sauce and 1/3 of mozzarella. Repeat layer.

Step 6

Bake in a pre-heated 350º F oven for 45 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting.

This is a really great lasagne and the sauce really makes it special. I think that adding the beef broth (something I've never done before) really takes it over the top. I don't traditionally use cottage cheese but I made as written and it wasn't bad! I will probably try it with ricotta but that is a personal preference which takes nothing away from this recipe.

I love this lasagna recipe for so many reasons. First and foremost it tastes heavenly. It's easy to put together, with ingredients I usually have on hand. It cost me much less than many other recipes I've tried. I used parmesan cheese from the green can and it worked for me. The only other change I made was to use 1 1/2 cans of beef broth. Thank you so much for posting Papa_D, you even got my DH liking lasagna! Now that's saying something!
