Step 1
Melt shortening. Don't skip this step! Pour into mixing bowl and let cool a bit.
Step 2
Add sugar and molasses, then egg, mixing well.
Step 3
Sift dry ingredients (except the topping sugar), add to mixing bowl and mix until incorporated.
Step 4
Chill one hour. Don't skip this step either!
Step 5
Preheat oven to 375 degrees and grease cookie sheets.
Step 6
By hand, form dough into one inch balls and roll in remaining sugar, using a cereal bowl.
Step 7
Bake for 8-10 minutes, being careful not to over-bake.

Note: To get the texture just right, you can't deviate from the recipe - specifically (1) don't substitute the shortening, (2) melt the shortening, and (3) chill the dough.
