"These cookies are absolutely irresistible! Favorite cookie of all the kids in our family, even the grown up ones :) These are a staple at our house for the holidays. Recipe makes 30 cookies."

Melt shortening. Don't skip this step! Pour into mixing bowl and let cool a bit.
Add sugar and molasses, then egg, mixing well.
Sift dry ingredients (except the topping sugar), add to mixing bowl and mix until incorporated.
Chill one hour. Don't skip this step either!
Preheat oven to 375 degrees and grease cookie sheets.
By hand, form dough into one inch balls and roll in remaining sugar, using a cereal bowl.
Bake for 8-10 minutes, being careful not to over-bake.
Note: To get the texture just right, you can't deviate from the recipe - specifically (1) don't substitute the shortening, (2) melt the shortening, and (3) chill the dough.
