Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 3/4 cup butter flavor shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon clove
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • TOPPING
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

How to Make

  • Step 1: Melt shortening. Don't skip this step! Pour into mixing bowl and let cool a bit.

  • Step 2: Add sugar and molasses, then egg, mixing well.

  • Step 3: Sift dry ingredients (except the topping sugar), add to mixing bowl and mix until incorporated.

  • Step 4: Chill one hour. Don't skip this step either!

  • Step 5: Preheat oven to 375 degrees and grease cookie sheets.

  • Step 6: By hand, form dough into one inch balls and roll in remaining sugar, using a cereal bowl.

  • Step 7: Bake for 8-10 minutes, being careful not to over-bake.

  • Step 8: Note: To get the texture just right, you can't deviate from the recipe - specifically (1) don't substitute the shortening, (2) melt the shortening, and (3) chill the dough.
