Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.
Add milk and egg. Stir until blended and set aside 30 minutes to soften corn meal.
Place shortening in 8-inch ovenproof skillet (preferably iron) or cake pan and heat it to 425' in oven.
When sizzling, add to batter, add the chilies, stir, and pour all of it at once into skillet.
Bake 20-25 minutes at 425' F.
