Step 1: Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.
Step 2: Add milk and egg. Stir until blended and set aside 30 minutes to soften corn meal.
Step 3: Place shortening in 8-inch ovenproof skillet (preferably iron) or cake pan and heat it to 425' in oven.
Step 4: When sizzling, add to batter, add the chilies, stir, and pour all of it at once into skillet.
Step 5: Bake 20-25 minutes at 425' F.
