"I used to make this casserole a lot as it is a lot easier than cabbage rolls and tastes similar with half the work. Over the years I have made changes to the original recipe which was printed in The Finnish Cookbook"

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Cook the cabbage and carrots in boiling water for 5 minutes; drain; put back in the pot and then add the butter, syrup, salt and thyme.

Step 2

In a separate bowl mix together the ground beef (or turkey), bread crumbs, milk and eggs.

Step 3

Butter a large casserole (3 quarts) and layer the cabbage and meat mixture in it, beginning and ending with the cabbage.

Step 4

Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 - 1 1/2 hours or until the meat is done.

No special items needed.

Very good, different but good, I made exactly as stated only added salt, pepper and a clove of minced garlic to the beef mixture, I don't think I would change anything next time I make it I made it with beef this time, I may try turkey next time and add in a bit of cayenne to the beef or turkey mixture, thank you ellie!
