Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, set oven rack to second-lowest position, then grease a 13 x 9-inch baking pan.

Step 2

APPLE PIE FILLING:; in a bowl toss the apples with lemon juice.

Step 3

In another small bowl combine 1 cup sugar with 2 tablespoons flour, 2 teaspoons cinnamon and nutmeg; add to the apple slices and toss to combine; set aside while preparing the crumb topping.

Step 4

CRUMB MIXTURE: Prepare two separate bowls for the crumb mixture.

Step 5

In each bowl place 1 cup oats, 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed, 1 cup flour, 1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda; toss to combine.

Step 6

To each bowl mix in 1/2 cup melted butter plus 2 tablespoons melted butter; mix well to combine, then finish mixing using your hands until the mixture is crumbly.

Step 7

To one bowl, add in 1/2 cup chopped nuts (this will be your topping mixture).

Step 8

Sprinkle the bowl with the nuts in it into the bottom of the baking dish then pat down slightly with you hand.

Step 9

Sprinkle the apple mixture over the crust, then sprinkle the remaining nut topping over the apples (do not press down).

Step 10

Bake for 40-45 minutes or until apples are fork-tender (to test this stick a fork into the apples after about 35 minutes of baking to see if they are tender).

Step 11

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream

With lots of apples from the orchard I decided to make this crisp. I absolutely loved the double topping and since its my favorite part of the crisp I was crazy for this! I have added it to my favs and will be making it throughout the winter. Always a satisfying and extra yummy treat!

You kind of take apple crisp for granted. It's always good...BUT...if you haven't tried Kittencal's version you don't know what you're missing. This is OUTSTANDING. Simply the best.

I have always loved apple crisp and when I saw double crust with the topping and nuts involved I was in. This is a prize winning dessert in every way for me. I get twice the topping, twice the flavor and topped with ice cream it is a to die for dessert and I will have and enjoy it many more times to the max! Thank you Kittencal!
