Step by Step Method

Step 1

Combine four, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

Step 2

Cut in Butter

Step 3

Combine egg and buttermilk, stir into flour mixture just until moistened

Step 4

Fold in raisins - Knead 1 minute

Step 5

Shape into a round loaf; place one greased baking sheet

Step 6

Cut 1/4 inch deep cross in top of loaf, beat remaining egg; brush over loaf.

Step 7

Bake 375 for 30-35 minutes or golden brown.

Fabulous Irish soda bread! Let me start off by saying that I added both eggs to the dough and didn't realize it was probably supposed to be one until I saw that I needed to brush the top with remaining egg. Oops! I just added a bit more flour when kneading the dough and it worked out fine. I omitted the raisins since my family is not crazy about them in breads. Thank you for posting this winner!
